Random number generator 1-17 for a group of 17
Seventeen is an awkward number. It does not split into pairs or even teams, so somebody always ends up as the extra. The random number generator 1-17 makes that call fair. Give each person, player or item a number, spin, and let the wheel decide who sits out, who goes first or who takes the odd job.
It also answers a plain “pick a number between 1 and 17” for any list of 17 things.
How to use it with a group
- Give everyone a number from 1 to 17. A class list or a roster in alphabetical order makes this quick.
- Press Spin, or click the wheel itself.
- Call out the number in the result box.
- Choose Remove it if that person should not come up again during this visit.

Numbers to skip
Missing a player? Skip their number and keep everyone else’s the same. Your skip list is saved in this browser.
No repeats
Each number is drawn once until you press “Put drawn numbers back”. That gives you a speaking order, a turn order, or a rotation for who sits out, with nobody picked twice.
Results tally and log
The tally shows how often each number has come up. Over several sessions, a quick look tells you whether one person has been picked a lot.
Spin time
A short spin keeps a class moving. Set 1 to 3 seconds in the Settings tab when you call many numbers in a row.
Where 17 comes up
- Pairs with one extra. Pick who works with the teacher or joins a group of three.
- Pickup games. One player starts on the bench, then rotates in.
- Presentation order for a class or team of 17.
- Sample picks. Choose one of 17 survey forms, products or files to check.
Fair turns for everyone
Each person has a 1 in 17 chance on any single spin, about 6 percent. The pick is made by your browser’s cryptographic random generator before the wheel turns. Nobody can time a click to change it.
To call each number exactly once over a longer session, the random number generator no repeats page has No repeats on from the start. If you would rather see names than numbers, paste your group into the wheel of names.
Frequently asked questions
With 17 people, how do I choose who sits out or gets a bye?
Give each person a number from 1 to 17 and spin once. The number that lands sits out this round, and the other 16 split into eight pairs.
What is the chance that I get picked?
On a single spin it is 1 in 17, about 6 percent. With No repeats on, your odds go up with each spin that does not land on you.
Someone is absent today. Do I need to renumber everyone?
No. Type their number in the Numbers to skip box and the wheel leaves it out. The rest of the group keeps the same numbers.
How do I make sure the same person does not sit out twice?
Leave No repeats on between rounds, or type the numbers who already sat out into the skip box, which is saved in this browser.
Can I get a full order for all 17 people?
Yes. Switch on No repeats and spin until the wheel is empty. The Results log lists all 17 numbers in the order they came up.
