A random color generator with the codes included

This random color generator gives you a color and the codes you need to use it. Spin the wheel for one of 32 named colors, or press one button to pull a shade from all 16,777,216 colors a six-digit HEX code can describe. Either way, the result shows a swatch with its HEX, RGB and HSL values.

It suits designers who want a starting point, artists looking for a prompt, and teachers running color games.

How to use the color picker wheel

      1. Press Spin in the wheel center, click the wheel, or press Ctrl + Enter.
      2. When the color picker wheel stops, the result box shows a swatch, the color name and three codes.
      3. Choose Done, Remove it to take that color off the wheel, or Spin again.

To skip the wheel, open the Options tab and press “Generate any color”. The result appears right away, with the HEX code as its name.

      Picking and using colors

      Named colors on the wheel

The wheel holds two sets. Switch each one on or off with the Color set chips in the Options tab.

      • Basic (12 colors): red, orange, yellow, green, blue, purple, pink, brown, black, white, gray and teal.
      • Extended (20 colors): cyan, magenta, lime, indigo, navy, maroon, olive, coral, turquoise, gold, lavender, beige, salmon, violet, crimson, sky blue, tan, khaki, orchid and chocolate.

Use Basic alone for young kids or simple games. Leave both on for the full 32.

      Any color at all

“Generate any color” picks a random six-digit HEX value, and every one of the 16,777,216 values has the same chance. Most of that space is in-between shades, so expect muted and odd colors as often as bright ones.

For a wheel that looks like a real color wheel, press “Full color spectrum wheel”. It fills the wheel with 72 bright hues, one every 5 degrees around the rainbow, and the result shows the HEX code of the hue you land on. “Named colors” puts the named list back.

      Reading the codes

Each result lists three formats. Teal, for example, comes back as HEX #00897B, RGB 0, 137, 123 and HSL 174, 100%, 27%. HEX and RGB work in CSS and in most design apps. HSL is easier to adjust by hand when you want a lighter or less saturated version of the same hue.

The Results tab logs every pick in order: names for wheel colors and HEX codes for generated ones. You can copy the list or download it as a CSV file or an image.

      A palette for each result

Under “Palette for each result” in the Options tab, choose a color scheme. Each time a color comes up, a row of swatches appears with matching colors:

      • Complementary: the color and its opposite on the color wheel.
      • Analogous: the color plus its neighbors 30 degrees to each side.
      • Triadic, split complementary and tetradic: three or four hues spaced around the wheel.
      • Monochromatic: five lighter and darker shades of the same hue.

Click a swatch to copy its HEX code.

      Colors from your image

Open “Colors from your image” and choose a photo or a logo. The tool pulls out up to 8 main colors, and you can click anywhere on the image to add the color under your cursor. Press “Put these colors on the wheel” to spin only those colors, or “Back to named colors” to return to the named sets. The image stays on your device.

      Ways to use it

      • Art prompts. Spin three times, then paint, draw or build with only those colors.
      • Design starting points. Generate a base color and copy a triadic or analogous palette straight from the swatches.
      • Kids’ games. Spin, then have everyone find something in the room in that color.
      • Assigning colors. Give each player or team a color, and use Remove it so no two get the same one.

      A note on fairness

Every named color has one equal slice, and the winner is drawn with your browser’s cryptographic random generator before the wheel spins. Generated colors come from the same source.

Slices always show their true colors, so the color themes in Settings do not repaint this wheel. The other settings work as usual: spin time, sound, confetti and the mystery wheel.

If your project needs a number as well, such as a font size or a grid count, try the random number generator. To spin a list of your own colors, such as paint names or brand shades, type them into the picker wheel on the homepage.

      Frequently asked questions

How many colors can it pick from?

The wheel holds 32 named colors, 12 in the Basic set and 20 in the Extended set. The Generate any color button picks from all 16,777,216 colors a six-digit HEX code can describe.

Which color codes does the result show?

Every result shows a swatch with its HEX, RGB and HSL values underneath. Generated colors use their HEX code as the name.

What is the difference between the Basic and Extended sets?

Basic covers 12 everyday colors such as red, blue, green and teal. Extended adds 20 more specific shades, including coral, turquoise, lavender, crimson and navy.

Can it make a whole color palette?

Yes. After every result, the Options tab builds a palette around that color. Choose complementary, analogous, triadic, split complementary, tetradic or monochromatic, then click any swatch to copy its HEX code.

Why do so many generated colors look muted?

Every HEX value has the same chance, and most of the 16.7 million possible values are in-between shades instead of pure brights. For bold, familiar colors, spin the named wheel instead.

How do I keep a color from being picked twice?

Choose Remove it in the result box and that color leaves the wheel. To do this on every spin, turn on Remove each winner automatically in Settings, and use the restore button in the Options tab to bring colors back.
