A random number generator 1-4 for quizzes, quarters and four players
The random number generator 1-4 spins a wheel with four equal slices. It is built for anything that comes in fours: multiple choice letters A to D, the four quarters of a game or a year, or four players around a table. Spin once and you get a fair pick. No app or account needed.
Some people search “pick a number between 1 and 4”; others want a quick way to choose one of four options without bias. Both work the same way here.
How to use it for four options
- Decide what each number means. For a quiz: 1 = A, 2 = B, 3 = C, 4 = D.
- Press Spin, click the wheel, or use Ctrl + Enter.
- Note the number, then choose Spin again for the next question or round.
- Open the Results tab to see every number in order and copy the list when you are done.
Options on this wheel
Numbers to skip. A quiz item with only three choices? Skip 4 for that spin. A game in its last quarter? Skip the quarters already played.
No repeats. Each number comes out once until you press “Put drawn numbers back”. Use this for turn order or to assign four people to four jobs.
Remove each winner automatically. Found in the Settings tab, this takes every drawn number out of play without a click on Remove it.
Results tally. If you shuffle a whole answer key, the tally lets you check that A, B, C and D appear in roughly even amounts.
Use cases
- Answer key shuffle. Teachers spin once per question so the right answer is not always B.
- Pick a quarter. In a sports pool or a classroom game, choose which quarter counts for a bonus.
- Four player games. Decide who deals, who goes first, or which seat each person takes.
- Quarterly planning. Choose which quarter of the year a side project starts, 1 = January to March up to 4 = October to December.
Equal chances
Every slice has a 1 in 4 chance, which is 25 percent. Your browser’s cryptographic random generator picks the result first, and the wheel then turns to show it. Over a short run, one letter can come up more than the others. That is normal and evens out over many spins.
A four sided die does the same job. The dice roller has a d4 if you prefer to roll.
Frequently asked questions
How do I use this to place correct answers on a multiple choice quiz?
Let 1 stand for A, 2 for B, 3 for C and 4 for D. Spin once per question and put the correct answer in the letter that comes up, so the answer key has no pattern students can learn.
What is the chance of landing on any one number from 1 to 4?
It is 1 in 4, or 25 percent, on every spin. That stays true no matter what came up before.
One question only has three answer choices. What should I do?
Type 4 in the Numbers to skip box before that spin. The wheel then draws only from 1, 2 and 3. Remove it from the box afterward to get all four back.
Can I set a random seating order for four players?
Yes. Number the players 1 to 4, switch on No repeats, and spin four times. The Results log lists the order, and you can copy it with the Copy button.
Does it remember my settings?
Your skip list and the No repeats switch are saved in this browser. This page always opens on 1 to 4, and numbers that were drawn with No repeats are only held for the current visit, so a page reload puts them back.
