Random number generator 1-3 for picking one of three

Three options is where a coin stops being useful. The random number generator 1-3 gives each choice an equal shot: number your options 1, 2 and 3, spin the wheel, and the number that lands is the one you go with. It runs in your browser for free and needs no sign up.

Search engines see this as “pick a number 1-3”, but most people use it to choose between three plans, three people or three tasks.

    Three steps to a decision

    1. Write your mapping where everyone can see it. For example: 1 = movie night, 2 = board games, 3 = a walk to the park.
    2. Spin with the button in the middle, a click on the wheel, or Ctrl + Enter.
    3. Accept the number in the result box. Choose Remove it if you want that option gone before the next spin.

    Options that fit three choices

    Numbers to skip

If one option turns out to be off the table, type its number in the skip box. A spin between the two that are left is the same as a coin toss. The skip list is saved in your browser, so clear it when you are done.

    No repeats for a ranking

With No repeats switched on, each number can be drawn once. Spin until all three are out and you have a random first, second and third. This is handy for deciding who presents first, who picks the next game, or the order to tackle three chores.

    Results tab

The tally shows how many times each of 1, 2 and 3 has come up. Use it for best of five between three options: the first number to reach three wins.

    Good times to use it

    • Three friends and one front seat.
    • Three takeout menus on the counter.
    • A teacher choosing which of three groups shares first.
    • Three tasks on a to-do list when you cannot decide where to start.

Is a three way spin fair?

Each spin is independent, and every number has a 1 in 3 chance, about 33 percent. The result comes from your browser’s cryptographic random generator and is fixed before the animation starts. How hard or fast you click does not matter.

For options with real names on the slices, try the decision wheel. If you have a fourth option, the random number generator 1-4 is set up for it.

    Frequently asked questions

What are the odds of each number from 1 to 3?

Each number has a 1 in 3 chance on every spin, which is about 33 percent. Earlier spins do not change that.

Can I drop one choice after someone vetoes it?

Yes. Type that number in the Numbers to skip box. The wheel rebuilds with the two numbers that remain, and each of those now has a 50 percent chance.

How do I put three people in a random order?

Number the people 1, 2 and 3, turn on No repeats, and spin. After two spins only one number is left, so the third place is settled. The Results log shows the full order.

Can the wheel show words instead of numbers?

Not on this page, because the slices are always the numbers 1, 2 and 3. Write your labels down before you spin, or use an editable wheel such as the decision wheel if you want words on the slices.

Is a wheel with only three slices still fair?

Yes. The winning number is picked by your browser's cryptographic random generator before the spin starts. The size of the slices has no effect on the draw.
