Spin the decision wheel when you are stuck

You have been going back and forth for ten minutes. Takeout or cook? Clean now or after lunch? The decision wheel ends the loop. Spin it once and it gives you an answer like “Go for it” or “Wait a day”, or one of the options you typed in yourself. It is free, works in any browser, and you do not need to sign up.

How to use the decision wheel

    1. Decide whether the six ready answers fit your question, or type your own options in the Entries tab, one per line.
    2. Press Spin, click the wheel, or press Ctrl + Enter.
    3. Read the result under “The wheel says”.
    4. Press Done to accept it, or Spin again if you agreed on best of three beforehand.

Make the wheel fit your decision

    Ready answers

The default wheel has six general answers: Do it, Skip it, Wait a day, Ask a friend, Go for it and Not today. They work for almost any question that starts with “Should I”.

    Quick lists

Under Quick lists in the Entries tab you will find four sets:

    • Yes, no or maybe: each answer appears twice for a busier wheel with even odds.
    • Weekend plans: Stay in, Go out, Day trip, See friends, Movie night, Outdoors.
    • What to do now: Work, Rest, Exercise, Clean, Read, Call someone.
    • Who pays: You, Me, Split it, Loser of a game.

Weights for the option you lean toward

Sometimes you are not neutral, and that is fine. Press “Weights, labels and colors” and give your preferred option a weight of 2 or 3. It gets a bigger slice and a bigger chance, but the others still have a shot. You can also lower a weight below 1, down to 0.1, for an option you would accept only now and then.

    Remove options as you go

Say you are choosing which of five errands to do first. Turn on “Remove each winner automatically” in Settings and spin until the list is empty. You get a random order for the whole afternoon.

    When a decision wheel helps

    • Food and plans. Put the three places you would all be happy with on the wheel and spin. Nobody has to be the one who chose.
    • Two people who cannot agree. Load “Who pays” or type both suggestions. Agree to accept the result before anyone presses Spin.
    • Breaking procrastination. Load “What to do now” and do whatever comes up for 20 minutes.
    • Checking your gut. Spin, then notice how you feel about the answer. If you are disappointed, you just learned what you really wanted.

    Is the decision fair?

The result is picked by your browser’s cryptographic random generator before the wheel moves, and the spin then lands on that slice. With equal weights every option has the same chance. The Results tab keeps a tally, which is handy for best of three.

Keep the wheel for low stakes choices. It is a tie breaker, not advice.

For a plain yes or no question, the yes or no wheel is set up for exactly that. To pick between two options in one tap, try the coin flip.

    Frequently asked questions

What answers are on the decision wheel at first?

Six ready answers: Do it, Skip it, Wait a day, Ask a friend, Go for it and Not today. You can keep them, load a quick list, or type your own options.

Can I type my own options?

Yes. Open the Entries tab, clear the box, and type one option per line, such as three restaurants or two job offers you want to think about. The wheel redraws as you type.

How do I make one option more likely?

Press 'Weights, labels and colors' and raise that option's weight. A weight of 3 makes it three times as likely as an option with a weight of 1, and its slice grows to match.

    What are the quick lists?

They are ready sets of options: 'Yes, no or maybe', 'Weekend plans', 'What to do now' and 'Who pays'. Tap one and it replaces the current entries.

Should I let a wheel make an important decision?

Use it for small, everyday choices. For health, money, legal or safety decisions, talk to someone you trust. A wheel can still help you notice which result you were hoping for.

Can I keep my own decision wheels for later?

Yes. Use the saved wheels button under the wheel to store a wheel by name in this browser, then open it again whenever you need it.
