End the what-to-eat loop with a food picker wheel
“What do you want to eat?” “I don’t mind, you choose.” If that exchange sounds familiar, this food picker wheel is for you. It holds a list of meals, cuisines or restaurants, and one spin picks one of them at random. Use it as a what to eat wheel for a single dinner, or to plan a whole week of meals. It is free and works without an account.
How to use it
- Start with the twelve foods already on the wheel (pizza, tacos, sushi and so on), or tap a quick list.
- Edit the text box so the wheel shows only things you would really eat tonight. One entry per line.
- Press Spin in the center of the wheel, click the wheel, or press Ctrl + Enter.
- The dialog announces “You are eating” and the pick. Choose Done, Remove it, or Spin again.
The built-in quick lists
Five buttons above the text box load a ready list:
- Breakfast: pancakes, omelet, avocado toast, oatmeal and four more.
- Lunch: sandwich, salad, soup, burrito bowl, wrap, noodles, sushi, leftovers.
- Dinner: ten mains, from stir fry and curry to roast chicken and steak.
- Takeout: ten options, including Chinese, Indian, Mexican, Thai and Greek.
- Dessert: ice cream, brownies, cookies, cheesecake and four others.
Loading a quick list replaces whatever is on the wheel. If you have built a list you care about, save it first with the Saved wheels button under the wheel.
Make the wheel match your kitchen
Add real options
The wheel is most useful when every slice is something you can get. Type in the restaurants near you, the meals you have ingredients for, or the delivery places you trust.
Give favorites a bigger slice
Open “Weights, labels and colors” and raise the weight on an entry. A weight of 2 doubles its slice and its chance. You could weight the cheap options up and the expensive ones down, for example.
Use Remove it as a veto
If the wheel lands on something that someone cannot face, choose Remove it and spin again. The entry stays off the wheel until you press the Restore button.
Add pictures
“Add images” puts photos on the slices, such as shots of your usual dishes. The pictures are resized in your browser and are not uploaded anywhere.
Ways to use it
- Couples and families. Each person adds two options, then everyone agrees to eat what the spin says.
- Office lunch. Send the share link so coworkers can see the options, then one person spins on a shared screen.
- Weekly meal plan. Turn on “Remove each winner automatically” in Settings and spin seven times. The Results tab lists the meals in order, and the Copy button lets you paste them into your shopping notes.
- Two-step takeout. Spin the Takeout list for a type of food, then build a second wheel of restaurants that serve it.
Is it fair?
Each food has the same chance unless you set weights. The pick comes from your browser’s cryptographic random generator and is made before the wheel moves, so the animation only shows you the answer.
More wheels for the evening
Dinner sorted? The movie picker wheel chooses what to watch afterward. And for a simple “should we order dessert” question, try the yes or no wheel.
Frequently asked questions
How does the food picker wheel decide what I eat?
It picks one entry at random from the foods on the wheel. Each food has the same chance unless you change the weights, and the pick is made by your browser's cryptographic random generator.
Can I add my own restaurants or meals?
Yes. Type or paste them into the Entries box, one per line. You can mix dishes, cuisines and restaurant names on the same wheel.
What food lists are built in?
There are quick lists for Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner, Takeout and Dessert, plus a general starting list of twelve foods. Clicking a quick list replaces whatever is on the wheel.
Can I make a favorite food come up more often?
Yes. Open 'Weights, labels and colors' and give that food a higher weight. A weight of 3 makes it three times as likely as a food left at 1.
How do I avoid getting the same meal twice in a week?
Choose 'Remove it' after each spin, or switch on 'Remove each winner automatically' in Settings. Picked meals stay off the wheel until you press Restore.
Will my food wheel still be there tomorrow?
Yes, as long as you use the same browser on the same device. The wheel autosaves in local storage, and Saved wheels lets you keep several named lists, such as one for weeknights and one for takeout.
