Random number generator 1-16 for bracket seeding
A 16 team bracket needs seeds from 1 to 16, and when there is no ranking to go on, a random draw is the fair answer. The random number generator 1-16 handles it one spin at a time. Spin until every team has a seed, then fill in your bracket. It runs in your browser and costs nothing.
It works for any group of 16 as well, if you just need to pick a number between 1 and 16.
How to seed 16 teams
- List the teams and give each a fixed ID from 1 to 16. Alphabetical order works.
- Switch on No repeats in the Options tab.
- Spin once, using the button, a click on the wheel, or Ctrl + Enter.
- The first ID that lands becomes the 1 seed. Keep spinning: the second ID is the 2 seed, and so on.
- After 15 spins, the last team left takes the 16 seed.
- Copy the list from the Results tab and build the bracket.
First round matchups
Once the seeds are set, a standard bracket pairs them like this:
- 1 vs 16 and 8 vs 9
- 5 vs 12 and 4 vs 13
- 6 vs 11 and 3 vs 14
- 7 vs 10 and 2 vs 15
Options that help the draw
No repeats keeps a team from getting two seeds. Press “Put drawn numbers back” to redo the whole draw.
Numbers to skip is for teams that already have a seed from a past result. Skip their IDs and draw the rest.
Remove each winner automatically in the Settings tab saves a click on every spin.
Full screen and a longer spin time help when coaches or players are watching the draw live.
Where 16 seeds come up
- Office or school tournaments with no rankings yet.
- Video game brackets with 16 entrants.
- Fantasy or pick’em pools that need a random draft order.
- Debate or quiz leagues setting first round pairings.
A fair seed draw
At the start, each team has a 1 in 16 chance of the top seed, 6.25 percent. Every pick comes from your browser’s cryptographic random generator, and the wheel only shows the result. Nobody can steer a team toward an easy path.
For a smaller field, the random number generator 1-8 is set up for eight. To split players into teams before the event, use the random team generator.
Frequently asked questions
How do I seed a 16 team bracket at random?
Give each team a fixed ID from 1 to 16, for example in alphabetical order. Turn on No repeats and spin 16 times. The first ID drawn is the 1 seed, the second is the 2 seed, and so on down the Results log.
Who plays whom once the seeds are set?
The usual first round is 1 vs 16, 8 vs 9, 5 vs 12, 4 vs 13, 6 vs 11, 3 vs 14, 7 vs 10 and 2 vs 15. Placed in that order down the bracket, the top seeds can only meet in later rounds.
Some teams earned their seeds. Can I randomize only the rest?
Yes. Type the IDs of the teams that are already placed in the Numbers to skip box. The wheel then draws only the teams that still need a seed.
What is the chance a team draws the top seed?
On the first spin every team has a 1 in 16 chance, which is 6.25 percent.
Can I save the seed list?
Press Copy in the Results tab to copy the full order, one number per line. The Results tab is also kept in this browser.
