This or that questions, two choices at a time

This or that questions are the fastest icebreaker there is. You hear two options, you pick one, and you find out something about the people around you. This page holds 304 this or that questions and shows them one at a time in a random order. Filter chips let you keep only the groups that fit your crowd, from kids and teens to coworkers and couples.

    Three cards from the deck:

    • “Coffee or tea?”
    • “Early bird or night owl?”
    • “Real tree or artificial tree?”

    How to use it

    1. Choose your groups with the chips. All seven are on to start.
    2. Read the card out loud.
    3. Everyone answers right away. No overthinking.
    4. Press Next, the space bar or the right arrow for the next pair.
    5. Press Previous or the left arrow to go back.

The “Seen so far” list collects every card from this session. Start over reshuffles the deck with your current chips and clears the list. The copy button copies the card on screen.

    The seven groups

    • Kids: foods, animals, games and school.
    • Teens: music, clothes, phones, weekends.
    • Adults: home, money, food and routines.
    • Couples: dates, gifts and trips.
    • Funny: odd and oddly specific picks.
    • Work: meetings, desks and work habits.
    • Christmas: trees, treats and traditions.

The counter under the card shows how many questions are left with your current filters. Each group also has a page of its own, such as the this or that questions for work or the this or that questions for kids.

    Ways to play

    Speed round

Set a timer for two minutes and go as fast as you can. Answers only, no explaining.

    Sides of the room

Point to one wall for “this” and the other wall for “that”. Everyone walks to their side. Great for big groups that need to move.

    Find your match

Two people answer ten cards each without talking. Count how many times they agree. Rotate partners and repeat.

    Explain one

After a quick round, everyone picks one answer to explain in a sentence. It turns a fast game into a real conversation.

    Where it works

    • New groups on the first day of class, camp or a job.
    • Parties while people are still arriving.
    • Online meetings, with answers typed in the chat.
    • Family dinners where each person reads the next card.

    Fair order

The deck is shuffled with your browser’s cryptographic random generator. Every card in your current mix comes up once before any repeat. If you change a chip in the middle of a game, the deck reshuffles with the new mix and the “Seen so far” list starts fresh. Your chip choices are saved in your browser, so the next visit opens with the same groups turned on.

For longer, tougher choices, switch to the would you rather questions. For open questions that get people telling stories, try the random question generator.

    Frequently asked questions

How many this or that questions are in the deck?

There are 304. Each card is tagged for one or more groups: Kids, Teens, Adults, Couples, Funny, Work or Christmas. The chips beside the card let you include or leave out each group.

What is the difference between this or that and would you rather?

This or that questions are short, usually two words against two words, and people answer in a second. Would you rather questions describe a situation and take longer to think through.

How do the filter chips combine?

A card stays in the deck if at least one of its tags is checked. Coffee or tea, for example, is tagged Adults and Work, so it stays if either chip is on.

Can I use only the Christmas questions?

Yes. Uncheck every chip except Christmas and the deck drops to the 44 holiday cards. There is also a separate page that shows only the Christmas set.

Does the page save my chip settings?

Yes. The chips you leave on are stored in your browser's local storage, so they stay the same when you come back on the same device.

Is it free to use in a classroom or office?

Yes. There is no account, no app and no cost. It runs in any web browser, including on a projector or a shared screen.
