Random Name Generator
Generate random first and last names in one click.
A random name generator for first and last names
This random name generator builds full names in one click by pairing a random first name with a random last name. You choose Any, Female or Male first names, decide whether to add a last name, and pick how many you want, up to 50 at a time. Writers use it for side characters, developers fill forms and mockups with it, and game masters use it to name the shopkeeper the players just started talking to.
The names are common modern first names and widely used last names from many backgrounds, such as Hazel Ortega or Desmond Park.
How to generate names
- Under First names, choose Any, Female or Male.
- Leave Add a last name on for full names, or switch it off for first names only.
- Enter how many names you need, from 1 to 50.
- Press Generate. A new list appears each time.
- Press the copy icon next to a single name, or Copy all to copy the whole list, one name per line.
A fresh batch of 10 appears as soon as the page loads.
The options that matter
First names: Any, Female or Male
Any draws from both lists together, 399 first names in all. Female uses 196 names and Male uses 203. If you only ever need girl names, the random girl name generator has that set on its own.
Add a last name
On by default. The 299 last names are paired freely with first names, so combinations change every time.
How many names
Between 1 and 50. Names within one batch never repeat.
What people use it for
Characters in stories
Need a neighbor, a classmate or a detective’s assistant? Generate 20 names, read them aloud and keep the one that sounds right for the character’s age and setting.
Test data and placeholders
Fill sign up forms, CRM demos, seating charts and design mockups with realistic names instead of “Test User 1”. Copy all pastes neatly into a spreadsheet column.
Tabletop and video games
Name non player characters, town guards and sports team rosters on the fly. For elves, dwarves and orcs, switch to the fantasy name generator.
Classroom role play
Teachers can hand out generated names for mock trials, pretend businesses or history simulations, so students step into a role instead of playing themselves.
Baby name brainstorming
Turn off the last name and generate 50 first names. Circle any that catch your eye and discuss them later.
Use names responsibly
Because names are paired at random, a result could match a real person by chance. Use generated names for fiction, games and test data. Do not use them to create fake accounts or to mislead anyone about who you are.
How the names are picked
Every name is drawn with your browser’s cryptographic random generator (crypto.getRandomValues), so each first and last name has the same chance. The tool is free, needs no account, and saves your settings only in your own browser.
Frequently asked questions
How many names can I generate at once?
Anywhere from 1 to 50. Type the number in the How many names box and press Generate. The default is 10.
Where do the names come from?
The generator combines a list of 196 female and 203 male first names with 299 common last names. With Any selected, that is close to 120,000 possible full names.
Can I get first names only?
Yes. Switch off Add a last name and the generator returns first names on their own, which is handy for baby name brainstorming or naming pets and characters.
Will the same name show up twice in one batch?
No. Each batch is made of unique names. A name can come up again the next time you press Generate.
Are these real people?
No. The first and last names are paired at random, so any match with a real person is a coincidence. Use them for fiction, games and test data, not to pretend to be someone.
Does the generator remember my settings?
Yes. Your count, first name choice and last name switch are saved in this browser for your next visit.
