Character names by race for your next tabletop session.

A DnD name generator for your table

This DnD name generator gives you character names by race for tabletop play. Pick elf, dwarf, halfling, gnome, orc, dragonborn, tiefling or human, press Generate, and you get ten full names ready to use. Players use it when rolling up a new character. Game masters use it when the party walks into a shop that did not exist five minutes ago.

It is free, runs in your browser, and works on a phone at the table.

    How to use it

    1. Open the Race menu and pick a race, or leave it on Any.
    2. Choose how many names you want, from 1 to 50.
    3. Keep “Add a family name” on for full names, or turn it off for first names only.
    4. Press Generate. Tap a name’s copy icon to grab it, or Copy all to paste the whole list into your notes.

On Any, each result ends with the race in brackets, such as “(Halfling)”. That is handy when you want the dice, not you, to decide who the stranger is.

    What the names sound like

Each race has its own syllable set, so the results have a clear feel. Halfling names are cozy, like Pipkin Tumblebarrel. Tiefling names lean dark, like Mordith Emberveil. Dragonborn names are long and heavy, like Kavarash Kerrhylon. Dwarf family names often sound like a craft or a stone, and orc family names sound like a battle title.

    At the table

    Session prep

Before a session, generate 50 names for each race likely to show up and copy them into your notes. During play, cross off names as you use them. No more pausing to invent a name while four players wait.

    NPCs on the fly

The party asks the guard captain’s name, and you had not planned one. Keep this tab open, set the race, press Generate, read the first name aloud. Write it down right away so it stays the same next week.

    New player characters

Generate a batch, read the names aloud with your group, and keep the one that suits your character’s background. Swap a syllable if it is close but not quite right.

    One-shots and pregenerated characters

Running a one-shot for new players? Fill out a sheet of pregenerated characters with names from different races so everyone gets something distinct.

    Villains and rivals

Switch to Orc or Tiefling, ask for 20, and look for a name with a hard sound that players will remember.

    Random and fair

Names are built with your browser’s cryptographic random generator (crypto.getRandomValues). On Any, all eight races are equally likely. A single batch never repeats a name.

Need dice too? The DnD dice roller handles every polyhedral die with modifiers and advantage. Writers building a whole world may prefer the fantasy name generator.

    Frequently asked questions

Which races does the DnD name generator cover?

Eight: Elf, Dwarf, Human, Halfling, Gnome, Orc, Dragonborn and Tiefling. Choose one in the Race menu, or pick Any to get a mix with each race in brackets.

    Are these official D&D names?

No. The names are made by combining syllables at random. They are written to fit the feel of each race, but they are not taken from any official book.

How do I come up with an NPC name fast during a session?

Keep the page open on your phone or laptop, set the race, and press Generate when a player asks the innkeeper's name. Take the first result and move on.

Can I get just a first name?

Yes. Turn off 'Add a family name'. For a dragonborn you can read the family name as a clan name, or drop it for a character who uses one name.

Will the race I picked be remembered next week?

Yes. The race, the count and the family name switch are saved in your browser, so the tool opens the way you left it.
